5. Why Study in Germany?

Germany is consistently ranked among the top choices for Hyderabad students going abroad — and for good reason. Here is what makes Germany uniquely attractive:

  • Near-zero tuition fees: Public universities in Germany charge only a semester contribution of €100–400 (~Rs 9,000–37,000/semester). Compared to Rs 25–40 lakh/year in the USA or UK, Germany is extraordinary value.
  • High employability after graduation: Germany has a chronic shortage of skilled workers. Engineers, software developers, data scientists and healthcare professionals from Indian universities are actively recruited.
  • Job Seeker Visa: After graduation, you can stay 18 months on a Job Seeker Visa to find employment. Once hired, you transition to a work permit or EU Blue Card directly.
  • Safe and modern student cities: Munich, Berlin, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Cologne are world-class cities with excellent public transport, international communities and student infrastructure.
  • Strong PR pathways: Work for 21–33 months after getting the EU Blue Card and you qualify for permanent residency in Germany. German citizenship available after 8 years (or 6 for exceptional contributions).
  • World-class research facilities: Germany is one of the top research nations globally. Max Planck, Fraunhofer and Helmholtz institutes are affiliated with German universities.
  • DAAD Scholarships: The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) offers full funding scholarships (tuition waiver + €934/month stipend + health insurance + travel) to Indian students. GoWest Hyderabad guides applicants through the competitive process.

Top German Universities for Indian Students

Germany has 400+ universities. For Indian students from Hyderabad, these consistently offer the best combination of ranking, English-medium programs and scholarship availability:

  • TU Munich (TUM): Ranked #30 globally. Engineering, CS, Management. Highest number of Indian students. Strong alumni network in Bosch, BMW, Siemens.
  • RWTH Aachen: #98 globally. Best for mechanical and electrical engineering. Large Indian student community in Aachen.
  • Heidelberg University: #63 globally. Life sciences, medicine, humanities. One of Germany's oldest universities (founded 1386).
  • TU Berlin: Engineering, Architecture, CS. Berlin's startup ecosystem is directly connected — many graduates join Berlin-based startups.
  • University of Stuttgart: World-renowned for automotive engineering. Connects directly to Daimler, Porsche and Bosch recruitment pipelines.
  • Frankfurt School of Finance & Management: Ranked top 10 in Europe for finance MBA. CFA, FinTech, banking — strong placement in German financial sector.
  • Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT): Germany's MIT equivalent for engineering and natural sciences.

Tuition Fees and Cost of Living in Germany for Hyderabad Students

One of the biggest advantages of Germany for Hyderabad families: the cost structure is radically different from UK/USA.

Expense Germany INR (approx.) UK Equivalent (INR)
Annual Tuition €0–€3,000 Rs 0–2.8L Rs 18–35L
Living Cost (Munich) €900–€1,300/mo Rs 84K–1.21L/mo Rs 1.2–1.8L/mo (London)
Living Cost (Berlin) €700–€1,000/mo Rs 65K–93K/mo
Total 2-Year Master's ~€20,000–€28,000 Rs 18.6L–26L Rs 35–55L (UK 1-yr)

The Blocked Account requirement: Germany requires Indian students to show €11,208 (~Rs 1.04 lakh) blocked in a German bank account before visa approval. This is your money — it proves you can support yourself for one year. It is returned to you as €934/month once you arrive.

APS Certificate — What Every Indian Student Must Know

Since 2022, all Indian students applying to German universities must get an APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) certificate before admission. This is not optional.

  • What it is: A verification of your Indian academic documents (10th, 12th, Bachelor's) by the German Academic Exchange Service
  • Where to apply: APS India, New Delhi (appointments via the APS India website — book 3-4 months in advance)
  • Documents needed: All academic transcripts + certificates + 10th, 12th, bachelor's degree + ID proof + language certificates
  • Processing time: 6-8 weeks after interview
  • Fee: ₹18,000 (non-refundable)
  • GoWest guidance: We help Hyderabad students prepare the complete APS document set and advise on interview preparation
