Parent Counselling Sessions

What Every Parent Wants to Know

If your child has come to you saying they want to study abroad, your first instinct as a parent is completely natural: Will my child be safe? Can we afford it? Will they actually get a job afterwards? And can I trust the consultancy they are talking to?

These are exactly the right questions — and they deserve honest, detailed answers, not sales pitches.

GoWest Education has been guiding Hyderabad families since 2009. We hold dedicated parent counselling sessions in Telugu and English at our Punjagutta office, specifically for parents who want to understand the full picture before making a decision. No jargon, no pressure, just clear information.

Parent Counselling Sessions — Free, Telugu & English

Our parent sessions are separate from student sessions. We cover costs, safety, loan options, university selection, and visa timelines in detail. Saturday sessions available for working parents.

How Much Does It Actually Cost?

The honest answer: it depends on the country, university tier, and your child's course. Below are realistic figures — not the lowest possible numbers, and not inflated worst-case numbers.

Country Tuition / yr Living / yr Total Investment Avg Starting Salary
🇺🇸 USA
2-yr MS
₹18–35L ₹8–12L ₹52–94L $60,000–90,000 USD/yr
🇬🇧 UK
1-yr PG
₹18–30L ₹9–13L ₹27–43L £28,000–45,000/yr
🇨🇦 Canada
2-yr PG Diploma
₹10–18L ₹7–10L ₹34–56L CAD 55,000–80,000/yr
🇩🇪 Germany
2-yr MSc (public univ.)
₹0–1L ₹6–9L ₹12–20L €35,000–55,000/yr
🇦🇺 Australia
2-yr Masters
₹12–22L ₹8–12L ₹40–68L AUD 65,000–90,000/yr

* Costs are indicative for 2025–26 intake. Exchange rate assumed: 1 USD ≈ ₹84. Actual tuition varies by university tier and program. Germany tuition-free applies to public universities; private universities charge fees.

Education Loans: What Banks Actually Offer

Most families finance study abroad through a combination of savings and an education loan. Here is what the major lenders offer:

SBI Student Loan

Up to ₹1.5 Cr with collateral. Interest from 8.5% p.a. Moratorium: course duration + 1 year. Best for students admitted to top-50 global universities.

HDFC Credila

Up to ₹75L without collateral for select universities. Interest from 10.5% p.a. Variable rate. Quick approval (7–10 days). Most popular among GoWest students.

Axis Bank Education Loan

Up to ₹40L unsecured, ₹75L+ with collateral. Fixed rate options available. Co-borrower (parent) income assessed. 3–5 day processing for pre-approved profiles.

Important: Loan repayment begins 1 year after course completion (moratorium period). A ₹40L loan at 11% over 10 years = EMI of approx. ₹55,000/month. At a starting salary of CAD 60,000 (~₹3.7L/month), this is very manageable. Always calculate the EMI before committing.

Is It Safe?

Safety is the first thing every parent asks. The honest answer: all popular study destinations are generally safe for Indian students, with some caveats you should know.

Country Indian Student Community Key Safety Notes Indian Embassy Emergency
🇺🇸 USA ~3.3 lakh Indian students Campus police, 911 emergency. Choose campus towns over large city centres for housing. Washington: +1-202-939-9888
🇬🇧 UK ~1.5 lakh Indian students 999 emergency. Universities have 24/7 security. London is safe; avoid late-night travel alone. London: +44-20-7836-8484
🇨🇦 Canada ~3.2 lakh Indian students Generally very safe. Large Punjabi community in Toronto, Vancouver, Brampton. 911 emergency. Ottawa: +1-613-744-3751
🇦🇺 Australia ~1.1 lakh Indian students 000 emergency. Larger Indian communities in Melbourne and Sydney. University welfare offices active. Canberra: +61-2-6273-3999
🇩🇪 Germany ~35,000 Indian students 110 police. Very safe. University student unions run active Indian/South Asian associations. Berlin: +49-30-25795–0

Campus Support Systems

Every university we partner with has:

  • International student office — visa, health insurance, on-campus support
  • Indian Students' Association or South Asian Students' Association
  • 24/7 campus security and emergency contact numbers
  • On-campus counselling and mental health support services
  • Accommodation guidance and homestay programs (for the first year)

GoWest Pre-Departure Briefing

Every GoWest student attends a pre-departure session before flying. We cover:

  • What to do on arrival (airport, SIM card, bank account, transit)
  • How to find accommodation and what to watch out for
  • Health insurance, OHIP/NHS/Medicare registration
  • Local Indian community contacts and temples in the city
  • Emergency contacts and consular helpline numbers
  • Banking, remittances, and tax filing basics

How Do I Know the Consultancy Is Trustworthy?

Hyderabad has hundreds of overseas education consultancies. Most are honest. A few are not. Here is how to tell the difference — and the questions you should ask before signing anything.

5 Red Flags to Walk Away From

  • "We guarantee admission to your preferred university." No consultancy can guarantee an admission decision — that is made by the university, not the consultant. Guarantees are a sales gimmick.
  • No clear breakdown of fees charged. Legitimate consultants charge a clearly stated service fee. Opaque pricing, "registration fees," and surprise charges mid-process are warning signs.
  • Pressure to apply to universities you have not heard of. Some consultants earn higher commissions from lesser-known universities. Ask why a particular university is being recommended.
  • No physical, verifiable office address. Always visit the office in person before engaging. Verify the address on Google Maps. A WhatsApp-only consultancy is a risk.
  • No professional certifications or affiliations. Look for ICEF membership, British Council partnerships, or accreditations from QEAC (Australia) or AIRC (USA).

GoWest's Credentials

  • ICEF (International Consultant for Education & Finance) certified member
  • British Council authorised study abroad consultant

  • Transparent fee structure — all charges explained in writing before any payment
  • 500+ partner universities across USA, UK, Canada, Australia, Germany, and more
  • Dedicated parent counselling sessions in Telugu and English
  • No commission-driven university recommendations — we tell you the right fit, not the highest-paying referral

Questions Every Parent Should Ask Their Consultancy

  1. Are you ICEF certified or affiliated with any recognised body?
  2. What is your exact service fee, and what does it cover?
  3. How many students have you placed in the university you are recommending?
  4. Do you receive commission from universities? If yes, does this influence your recommendations?
  5. Can I speak with a parent of a student you have placed in this country?
  6. What happens if my child's visa is rejected? What is your refund policy?
  7. Do you offer loan application assistance and pre-departure support?

After Studies — Will My Child Get a Job?

This is ultimately the question behind every other question. The honest answer: most students who study at recognised universities in these countries find employment — either abroad or in India — within 12–18 months of graduating.

Here are the post-study pathways, based on realistic data:

Country Post-Study Work Visa Typical Time to First Job PR Pathway
🇺🇸 USA OPT: 12 months (STEM: up to 36 months) 3–9 months after graduation H-1B lottery; EB-2/EB-3 (long wait, 8–20 yrs for Indians)
🇬🇧 UK Graduate Visa: 2 years (PhD: 3 years) 2–6 months after graduation Skilled Worker visa; ILR after 5 years of residence
🇨🇦 Canada PGWP: up to 3 years (matching study duration) 1–4 months (large Indian community helps) Express Entry (CRS-based); PNP streams. Realistic in 2–4 years
🇩🇪 Germany 18-month job-seeker visa post-graduation 3–12 months (German language helps) EU Blue Card; PR after 21–33 months of employment
🇦🇺 Australia Temporary Graduate (485 visa): 2–4 years 2–6 months (skill-shortage sectors) SkillSelect; State nomination; PR in 2–5 years
Realistic note on PR: PR pathways are increasingly competitive and policy-driven. Canada has tightened Express Entry CRS cut-offs. Australia has changed 485 visa conditions. We never promise PR — we explain the realistic pathway and your child's profile fit. Be wary of any consultancy that promises permanent residency as part of their pitch.

What If My Child Returns to India?

A foreign degree remains a strong differentiator in the Indian job market. Indian MNCs, Big4 consulting firms, IT product companies, investment banks, and startups actively recruit candidates with overseas education. Salary premium for returnees with 2–3 years of international work experience: typically 30–60% above peers with only Indian experience.

Parent FAQs

My child has backlogs. Can they still study abroad?

Yes, in many cases. Countries like Germany, Canada (some colleges), and certain UK universities accept students with backlogs, provided the overall academic profile is strong and the backlogs have been cleared. USA universities are more selective, but community colleges and pathway programs remain open. A GoWest counsellor can assess your child's specific profile and identify universities where backlogs will not disqualify them.

Can we take an education loan without collateral?

Yes. Lenders like HDFC Credila and Avanse offer education loans up to ₹40–75 lakh without collateral for admissions to recognised universities abroad. The loan amount and terms depend on the university ranking, course, and co-borrower's income. Secured loans from SBI and Axis Bank offer lower interest rates for higher amounts.

How do we verify if a university is genuine?

Check the university on the official national accreditation body: SACSCOC/HLC/WSCUC for USA, UKVI's Sponsor Register for UK, TEQSA for Australia, DLI list for Canada, and HRK database for Germany. GoWest only recommends universities on these official lists and never suggests unrecognised institutions.

What if my child doesn't get PR and comes back?

A foreign degree still commands a significant premium in the Indian job market. MNCs, IT companies, consulting firms, and startups specifically recruit candidates with overseas education. Many students also return to India by choice after 2–3 years of work experience abroad. The ROI from salary premiums in India typically covers the education investment within 3–5 years.

Can we send money to our child abroad easily?

Yes. Under RBI's Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), Indian residents can remit up to USD 2,50,000 per financial year per person. This covers tuition fees, living expenses, and other education-related costs. Most banks offer wire transfers and Forex cards. A 20% TCS applies on remittances above ₹7 lakh per year, but this is adjustable against your income tax liability.

Is IELTS/PTE coaching necessary?

Most universities require IELTS (6.0–7.0) or PTE (58–65) for admission. Coaching is strongly recommended to reach the target score efficiently. GoWest offers in-house IELTS and PTE coaching at our Punjagutta centre. Students who practise with structured coaching typically reach their target score 30–40% faster than self-study.

How long does the visa process take?

Typical processing times: USA (F-1 visa) — 3 to 8 weeks after biometrics. UK (Student visa) — 3 weeks. Canada (Study Permit) — 8 to 12 weeks. Australia (Student visa subclass 500) — 4 to 6 weeks. Germany — 6 to 12 weeks including blocked account setup. Apply early — peak-season delays are common.

Can both parents attend the counselling session?

Absolutely yes, and we actively encourage it. Our parent sessions are specifically designed for both parents to attend together. We hold dedicated Saturday sessions for working parents. Sessions are conducted in Telugu and English. The more clearly we understand your family's expectations and financial picture, the better our guidance will be.
