UK Intakes

Overview of UK Intakes

The UK offers three major intakes for international students. Each comes with different advantages depending on your academic timeline and goals.

  • September Intake (Fall) – Primary & biggest intake
  • January Intake (Winter) – Second biggest
  • May Intake (Spring) – Limited availability

1. September (Fall) Intake

This is the main intake with the largest number of courses and scholarships.

Advantages

Application Timeline from Hyderabad — UK Intakes

Understanding the step-by-step timeline is one of the most practical things you can do before starting your UK application. From Hyderabad, the process involves not just university applications but also document preparation, English test bookings, VFS visa appointments, and potentially loan sanctions. Here is how the timeline breaks down for each intake.

For September Intake (Main):

  • October–December (prior year): Finalise your university shortlist based on course ranking, tuition fees, scholarship availability, and location. Begin drafting your Statement of Purpose (SOP) and gather academic documents — transcripts, degree certificates, and marksheets. Book your IELTS or PTE exam if you have not already taken it.
  • January–March: Submit university applications. UK universities use rolling admissions, meaning your application is reviewed when it arrives — earlier applications have an advantage, especially for courses with intake caps or scholarship deadlines tied to the admission offer date.
  • February–April: Receive Conditional or Unconditional Offers from universities. If you receive a Conditional Offer, fulfil any outstanding requirements (typically final marksheets or English test scores). Accept your Unconditional Offer and pay the deposit to hold your place.
  • April–May: Receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) number from the university. You cannot apply for a UK Student Visa without this CAS. The CAS contains important details about your course fees and course duration that will be referenced in your visa application.
  • May–July: Apply for the UK Student Visa through the UKVI online portal. Book your biometrics appointment at the VFS Global centre in Hyderabad or another city. Ensure you have proof of funds covering at least the first year of tuition and 9 months of living costs (approximately GBP 1,334 per month in London or GBP 1,023 per month outside London at 2026 rates).
  • August: Fly to the UK and arrive before the university's induction week, which typically falls in the second or third week of September. Many universities provide pre-sessional orientation programmes for international students arriving early in September.

For January Intake:

  • June–August: Research and apply to universities that offer January intake. Not all courses or universities run January cohorts — this limits your options compared to September, but it also means less competition at the application stage.
  • September–October: Receive university offers and CAS letters from accepting institutions.
  • October–November: Apply for the UK Student Visa. Visa processing typically takes 3 weeks but can extend to 6 weeks during peak periods, so submitting early is essential for a January start.
  • December–January: Depart Hyderabad and arrive in the UK before the course commencement date, usually in the second or third week of January.

Which UK Intake Should Hyderabad Students Choose?

This is the question GoWest Education counsellors answer most often for students from Hyderabad, Secunderabad, and across Telangana. The answer depends on your academic situation, readiness of your documents, and the specific course you are targeting.

Our recommendation: September intake for most students. Here is why:

  • September has the widest university and course selection. Many programmes, particularly competitive Master's courses in Data Science, AI, Finance, and Law, simply do not offer January intake. Choosing September keeps all your options open.
  • More scholarship opportunities are available for September intake students. Chevening, GREAT Scholarships, and most university merit awards are aligned to the September start. January intake students have noticeably fewer funded options.
  • You enter the main UK academic cohort, which matters for networking, internship recruitment cycles, and campus life. September students align with the majority of UK domestic and international students, creating a richer social and professional environment.
  • UK graduate job recruitment typically happens in autumn (October–December) and spring (March–May). A student who starts in September 2026 and graduates in September 2027 is perfectly positioned to participate in the autumn 2027 graduate recruitment cycle in UK companies.

Choose January intake only if: You completed your Bachelor's degree in November or December and do not have time to assemble a September application, or if you missed the September application window and cannot wait an entire year, or if you specifically need additional months to improve your IELTS score before applying.

UCAS vs Direct Applications — What Hyderabad Students Need to Know

One of the most confusing aspects of the UK application process for Indian students is understanding when to use UCAS and when to apply directly to universities. The distinction is straightforward but critically important.

  • Undergraduate (UG) in UK: All Bachelor's degree applications go through UCAS.com — the centralised UK university application platform. You submit one UCAS application and can apply to up to five universities simultaneously. UCAS requires a Personal Statement of up to 4,000 characters (approximately 650-700 words), not an SOP. You also need predicted or actual A-level grades or equivalent — for Indian students, 12th-standard board results serve as the equivalent. Application deadlines vary by university tier, with Oxford and Cambridge requiring UCAS applications by mid-October.
  • Postgraduate (PG) / Master's in UK: There is no central system for postgraduate applications. You apply directly to each university's own online portal — every university has its own process, document requirements, and deadlines. A standard PG application requires an SOP of 500-1,000 words, two Letters of Recommendation, academic transcripts, English proficiency scores (IELTS 6.5 overall for most Master's programmes), and a CV. Some universities also require a work experience statement or a research proposal for research-based programmes. Because each application goes directly to the department, building a relationship with a potential supervisor or admissions tutor before applying can significantly improve your outcome.

UK Study Costs from Hyderabad (2026)

One of the most important planning conversations GoWest Education has with families from Hyderabad is a clear breakdown of the total cost of a UK education in 2026. Many families focus only on tuition and are caught off guard by visa fees, health surcharges, and living expenses. Here is the full picture.

  • Tuition Fees: GBP 15,000 to GBP 35,000 per year for a Master's programme. GBP 12,000 to GBP 22,000 per year for a Bachelor's programme. Elite universities (LSE, UCL, Imperial, King's) sit at the higher end of this range.
  • Living Expenses: London: GBP 1,200 to GBP 1,800 per month, covering rent, food, local transport, and utilities. Other major cities (Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Nottingham): GBP 800 to GBP 1,200 per month. Students on tight budgets often choose cities outside London, where quality of life is good and housing is significantly cheaper.
  • Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): GBP 776 per year for students. This is paid upfront with your visa application for the full duration of your course — so a 1-year Master's requires GBP 776 and a 3-year PhD requires GBP 2,328. This charge gives you access to the UK's National Health Service (NHS) during your stay.
  • Total All-In Cost for a 1-Year Master's: Approximately GBP 30,000 to GBP 55,000, which at current exchange rates translates to approximately Rs. 32 lakhs to Rs. 60 lakhs. This assumes studying outside London for the lower estimate and in London for the upper estimate.

The 1-year Master's is the UK's most significant financial advantage. You complete a full postgraduate qualification in 12 months rather than the 2 years required in Canada, USA, or Australia. That saves an entire year of living costs — approximately Rs. 10-15 lakhs at current rates — making the total UK cost lower than many students expect when compared to a 2-year programme elsewhere.
