Scholarships in Canada for Indian Students

Canada offers several prestigious scholarships that Indian students can apply for. These awards significantly reduce the financial burden and recognise academic excellence, leadership, and research potential.

  • Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS): CAD 0,000 per year for 3 years. Awarded to doctoral students who demonstrate leadership and high academic achievement. Open to international students.
  • Ontario Trillium Scholarship (OTS): CAD 0,000 per year for up to 4 years. Offered by the Ontario government to attract top international PhD students to Ontario universities.
  • University of Toronto Scholarships: Various awards ranging from CAD ,000 to 5,000 per year. Includes the Lester B. Pearson International Scholarship — a fully funded award covering tuition, books, incidental fees, and full residence support for 4 years for exceptional undergraduate students.
  • UBC International Leader of Tomorrow Award: Covers the full cost of attendance at the University of British Columbia based on financial need and academic excellence. One of the most generous undergraduate awards in Canada.
  • University-Specific Merit Scholarships: McGill, McMaster, University of Alberta, and Simon Fraser University all offer entrance scholarships ranging from CAD ,000 to 5,000 for international students with strong academic records.

Most scholarships require a minimum GPA, English proficiency scores, and an outstanding SOP. GoWest counsellors help students identify scholarships they qualify for and strengthen their applications accordingly.

Canada PR Pathway: PGWP to Permanent Residency

One of the biggest reasons Indian students choose Canada is the clear and well-defined pathway from student visa to permanent residency. Here is how it works step by step.

Step 1 — Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP): After completing an eligible program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), graduates can apply for a PGWP valid for 1 to 3 years depending on the program duration. A 2-year master’s program, for example, typically earns a 3-year PGWP.

Step 2 — Express Entry System: Canada’s Express Entry pool manages applications under three streams: Federal Skilled Worker (FSW), Canadian Experience Class (CEC), and Federal Skilled Trades. Candidates receive a Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score based on age, education, language skills, and Canadian work experience. Higher CRS scores receive Invitations to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency in regular draws.

Step 3 — Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs): Each province runs its own immigration streams that align with local labour market needs. The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) and the BC Provincial Nominee Program (BC PNP) Tech Pilot are particularly popular with Indian IT professionals and graduates. A provincial nomination adds 600 points to your CRS score, virtually guaranteeing an ITA.

Step 4 — Atlantic Immigration Program (AIP): Provinces like Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador offer the AIP, a pathway designed to attract skilled workers to Atlantic Canada. Students who study or work in Atlantic Canada have a smoother and faster route to PR.

High-Demand Occupations: Software engineers, data scientists, healthcare workers (nurses, pharmacists), civil engineers, and financial analysts consistently appear on Canada’s in-demand occupation lists, giving graduates in these fields faster PR processing times.

Cost of Living in Canada for Indian Students

Managing your monthly budget is crucial for a smooth academic experience in Canada. Costs vary significantly between cities — here is a practical comparison for Indian students.

  • Toronto: CAD ,500–,200/month. Most expensive city. High rent (CAD 00–,400 for a shared room), but excellent job opportunities and the largest Indian community in Canada. Indian grocery stores like Nations Fresh Foods and Patel Brothers are easily accessible.
  • Vancouver: CAD ,400–,000/month. Rent is comparable to Toronto. Mild climate, large South Asian community in Surrey. Supermarkets like Fruiticana and Indian Spice House cater to Indian dietary preferences.
  • Winnipeg: CAD 00–,300/month. One of the most affordable cities for Indian students. Lower rent (CAD 50–00 for shared accommodation), lower food costs, and a growing Indian community. Ideal for students on a tight budget.
  • Halifax (Atlantic Canada): CAD 00–,200/month. Very affordable, friendly city with a smaller but growing Indian student community. Atlantic Immigration Program makes it easier to get PR after graduation.
Monthly Budget Breakdown (Average):

Accommodation (shared): CAD 00–,200  |  Groceries: CAD 00–50  |  Transport: CAD 00–50  |  Phone & Internet: CAD 0–00  |  Miscellaneous: CAD 00–00

Part-Time Work: International students can work up to 20 hours per week during academic semesters and full-time during scheduled breaks. At a minimum wage of CAD 5–7/hour (varies by province), students can earn CAD ,200–,400/month part-time, significantly offsetting living costs.

Co-op Programs: Many Canadian universities offer co-op (paid work placement) programs embedded within the degree. Co-op terms pay CAD 8–5/hour depending on the field, and the work experience counts toward your PGWP eligibility period.

Indian students will find familiar groceries, spices, and restaurants in most Canadian cities. Major Indian grocery chains and community-run stores are present in Toronto, Vancouver, Brampton, Calgary, and Edmonton. Cities like Winnipeg and Halifax have smaller but steadily growing Indian retail options.
