About Commonwealth Scholarship — UK Funded PhDs and Masters
The Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) is funded by the UK's FCDO and administered by the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC). For India, scholarships are offered for PhD study and Split-site PhDs (part UK, part India). Masters scholarships for India are also available through the Distance Learning pathway. The CSC covers tuition, monthly living allowance, flights, and thesis allowance.
Unlike Chevening (which is self-directed and field-agnostic), Commonwealth Scholarships prioritise applicants whose research directly contributes to development goals in their home country. Indian applicants working in health, education, agriculture, poverty reduction, climate change, or governance are particularly competitive. Applications go through the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) or other nominating bodies — GoWest helps you identify the right nominating agency for your background.

Frequently Asked Questions
No — Indian applicants must apply through a nominated body (typically the Association of Indian Universities — AIU). The CSC does not accept direct applications from India. GoWest helps you navigate the nominating agency process.
The CSC prioritises research that contributes to development in the scholar's home country. Strong fields for India: public health, agricultural sciences, environmental engineering, education policy, economics, water resources, and renewable energy. Generic research in CS or business without development links is less competitive.
A Split-Site PhD allows you to remain registered at an Indian university while spending 12 months at a UK university. This is less disruptive, maintains your Indian salary/position, and is excellent for researchers already mid-PhD in India. GoWest helps identify UK supervisors aligned with your research.
Highly competitive — India typically receives 15–20 residential awards per year across all fields. Split-site awards are more numerous. Strong academic record (first class), clear development-focused research proposal, and strong referee letters are essential. GoWest reviews all application documents.
There is no formal age limit, but most awardees are 25–40 years old. Eligibility requires: Indian citizenship, completed qualifying degree (Masters for PhD scholarships), and nomination by an approved body. Work experience strengthens the application.
