🇺🇸 USA — F-1 Student Visa Appointment

Step-by-Step: Before You Book

1. Complete the DS-160 form at ceac.state.gov. Save your application ID — you will need it at every stage.
2. Pay the MRV (Machine Readable Visa) fee — currently USD 185 (~₹15,400). Pay at any designated HDFC, ICICI, or Axis Bank branch, or online through ustraveldocs.com.
3. Receive your I-20 from your US university and pay the SEVIS fee (Form I-901 at fmjfee.com) — currently USD 350 for F-1 students. Keep the payment receipt.
4. Once the MRV and SEVIS fees are paid and the DS-160 is submitted, log in to ustraveldocs.com, create a profile, and schedule both the OFC (biometrics) and visa interview appointments.

Hyderabad-Specific Tips

The US Consulate Hyderabad (Begumpet) is one of five consulates in India. It serves students from Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Odisha, and parts of Karnataka and Maharashtra. During peak visa season — May through August — demand from students departing for the August/September intake spikes sharply. 🇬🇧 UK — Student Visa (Tier 4)

How the UK Student Visa Process Works

You do not deal with the UK High Commission directly for most visa applications — it all goes through VFS Global. The process has two parts: the online application on the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal, and the in-person VFS appointment for biometrics and document submission.

1. Receive your CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies) from your UK university. You cannot proceed without it — your CAS number must be entered in your online application.
2. Apply online via the UKVI portal (apply for a visa on the UK government website). Pay the visa fee (currently around £490 for a course longer than 6 months) and the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS — currently £776 per year of study).

However, "no appointment" does not mean "no waiting." IRCC processing times have been volatile over the past year; as of May 2026, standard processing is running 8 to 12 weeks from the date of submission.

Key steps for Indian students:

1. Get your Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
2. Create a GCKey or Sign-In Partner account on the IRCC portal and start your study permit application online.
3. If you have not provided biometrics for Canada in the last 10 years, you will be asked to do so. A Biometric Instruction Letter (BIL) will be issued, and you must visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC). The nearest VACs for Hyderabad students are in Chennai and Mumbai. Book the VAC appointment online through the VAC website after receiving your BIL.

The entire application happens online through the ImmiAccount portal managed by the Department of Home Affairs.

1. Receive your CoE (Confirmation of Enrolment) from your Australian university or TAFE.
2. Complete a health examination through an approved panel physician. In Hyderabad, MBBS-approved clinics include those listed on the ImmiAccount panel — results are submitted electronically to the Department of Home Affairs.
3. Create your ImmiAccount, select Subclass 500, and upload all documents: CoE, English scores, financial evidence, Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) statement, academic records, and health examination reference.
4. Pay the visa application fee (currently AUD 710, approximately ₹38,000) within ImmiAccount and submit.

If the Department requires biometrics, you will receive a notification in your ImmiAccount, and you will need to visit a VFS Australia centre. VFS Australia has a centre in Hyderabad — confirm the current address through the VFS website before visiting, as locations can change.

🇩🇪 Germany — National Visa for Studies

The German Consulate operates through VFS Germany for most document submissions and appointment scheduling, but the interview itself is at the consulate. Prepare documents: admission letter, APS certificate (if applicable — mandatory for students who completed their schooling and Bachelor's degree in India), proof of sufficient funds (blocked account at Deutsche Bank India or similar — minimum €11,208 for one year), health insurance, language proficiency (German or English depending on your program), academic transcripts, motivation letter.
4. Attend your appointment. Unlike other destinations, the German consulate does conduct a short interview in most cases, particularly if your program is in German or your documents raise questions.

🇮🇪 Ireland — Student Visa

Ireland: Apply Online, Submit by Post or VFS

Ireland's student visa process differs from others in that the primary application is online via the AVATS portal on the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) website. There is no visa interview. Once you complete the online form and receive your application summary, you print and sign it, attach your documents, and either post the package to the Irish Embassy in New Delhi or submit it in person at a VFS Ireland centre.

Hyderabad students typically send documents by courier to the Irish Embassy in New Delhi. Ensure you use a tracked courier service and keep the tracking number. Required documents include your acceptance letter from an Irish institution, proof of English proficiency, financial proof (funds to cover fees and living costs — approximately €7,000–€10,000 for the year), bank statements, and a cover letter outlining your study plans and intentions to return to India.

Unlike the UK, Ireland has no separate health surcharge. The visa fee itself is currently €60. Processing is handled by the embassy in New Delhi once they receive your physical documents.

Common Mistakes That Cause Appointment Delays

1. Booking Before You Have the Prerequisite Document

Every country requires a specific document before the visa process can begin: the I-20 for the USA, the CAS for the UK, the LOA for Canada, the CoE for Australia, the Zulassungsbescheid for Germany, and the acceptance letter for Ireland. Booking an appointment before this document arrives means you will attend without a complete file — officers will either reject your application on the day or, in the case of VFS submissions, return your documents.

2. Selecting the Wrong Appointment or Visa Type

On VFS and embassy portals, the appointment type matters. An "urgent appointment" slot that you book for a standard case costs more and does not guarantee a different outcome. More seriously, booking a visitor visa appointment instead of a student visa appointment (a surprisingly common error under the pressure of finding an available slot) means you lose the fee and must rebook from scratch.

3. Document Mismatch at the Window

Names, dates, and addresses must be exactly consistent across your passport, your financial documents, and your university documents. If your passport says "Venkata Subrahmanyam" but your bank statement says "V. Subrahmanyam," it creates a verification problem. 4. Financial Documents That Do Not Meet the Threshold

Each country has a minimum financial requirement. UK: funds to cover the first year of tuition plus £1,334 per month of living costs for courses outside London, or £1,023 for London. Germany: a blocked account with at least €11,208 for 12 months. USA: documented funds covering tuition plus living costs for the full program duration. Bank statements must be recent — typically no older than 28 days for UK, 3 months for USA, and 6 months for Germany. A statement that is one day outside the window will be flagged.

5. Leaving Appointment Booking Too Late

This is the most avoidable and the most common mistake. Students finalise their university decision in March or April, spend time celebrating, and only begin the visa process in June — by which time peak-season demand has consumed most available July and August slots.
